A pedestrian crossing on a busy Giffnock street has been repaired and is back in operation.
The traffic lights and crossing on Fenwick Road that is located next to the Orchard Park and just down from Catch Fish & Chips was out of service.
Signage was placed over the lights and with a diagonal red line through the red, amber and green sequence to highlight that they had broken-down.
Local MSP Jackson Carlaw contacted East Renfrewshire Council to express concerns that the crossing was out of service on the busy Giffnock road and he called on the local authority to resolve the issue as a matter of priority.
In early August, the council sent a response to confirm that a fault was identified on 15th July and a signals maintenance contractor attended the site on the same day.
The contractor established that ants had caused the circuits to short and a nest was found to be present within the controller cabinet.
A pest control company had to be called in to sort the situation.
The pedestrian crossing is now fully functional again and back in working order.
Scottish Conservative MSP for Eastwood, Jackson Carlaw said:
“The situation whereby the pedestrian crossing was not working at this particular section of Fenwick Road was a source of serious concern.
“This is a busy local road with a high volume of traffic and residents regularly use the crossing when visiting the outstanding local businesses on Fenwick Road.
“The crossing is also used by pupils who attend Giffnock Primary and St Ninian’s High School and so I stressed to the council that it had to be brought back into use before the start of the new academic term in August.
“The council confirmed with me that the crossing was put out of operation by a nest of ants and the services of a pest control company had been required to make the lights fully functional again.
“It is welcome that the pedestrian crossing is now back in service and with road safety on this section of Fenwick Road now restored to previous levels.”
