Jackson Carlaw MSP is encouraging his constituents to consider applying for an education programme at The Open University after meeting with representatives of the organisation at Holyrood.
A total of 185 people in Mr’s Carlaw’s Eastwood constituency are currently enrolled on a course at the university.
More than 60 percent of Eastwood learners receive a part-time fee grant to support them with their study and 40 percent of individuals from the constituency are pursuing a course in STEM.
The Open University offers opportunities to people of all age groups with just short of one-third of Eastwood students aged 35-44, one-quarter between 25-34 and a fifth aged from 45-54.
The data for Eastwood also shows that one in ten people studying at the university is aged over 55 and a further sixteen percent of students belong to the 18-24 category.
The Open University is the biggest provider of part-time undergraduate higher education in Scotland and the institution is a leader on the global stage when it comes to making available flexible distance learning courses.
The organisation offers a range of education initiatives including undergraduate, postgraduate, remote professional development courses and short study programmes in a varied set of subjects.
Scottish Conservative MSP for Eastwood, Jackson Carlaw said:
“I was delighted to have a positive and productive conversation with representatives of the Open University at the Scottish Parliament and to hear more about the range of exciting programmes on offer for people living in Eastwood.
“The institution provides a vast range of education opportunities for local people and as the demographic data shows, individuals from different generations are currently studying a course through the university.
“I would certainly encourage constituents in Eastwood to explore the programmes on offer at the Open University and to consider applying for the innovative courses available.”
