Former Scottish Conservative Leader, Jackson Carlaw will be voting for Rishi Sunak as the next Conservative Party Leader and Prime Minister.
Mr Carlaw has said he is backing Mr Sunak because of his achievements as Chancellor of the Exchequer and the leadership he provided for the economic response to Covid by introducing support schemes such as furlough.
The MSP for Eastwood has also talked up Mr Sunak’s unionist credentials and pointed to his recent public intervention confirming he will not allow a second independence referendum.
Mr Carlaw served as Scottish Conservative party leader between February and July 2020 and he was previously Deputy Leader to Ruth Davidson from November 2011 until her resignation in August 2019.
Former Scottish Conservative Leader, Jackson Carlaw MSP said:
“Appointed Chancellor just weeks before the greatest economic and health crisis Britain has faced since the Second World War, Rishi set ideology to one side and did everything necessary to support the country through the most challenging circumstances.
“Rishi’s furlough scheme was simply world leading and it provided essential and unprecedented support to millions of families during the Covid national emergency.
“Critically, Rishi has been clear that no issue is more important to the Conservative and Unionist party than keeping our four nations united as one United Kingdom and that he would forge the most active UK-wide Government in decades.
“It is this level of commitment, imagination and passion for Scotland’s place in the UK that is needed from our next party leader and Prime Minister in the face of Nicola Sturgeon’s reckless push for another referendum.
“It is his time to lead our country. I am Ready for Rishi.”
