Jackson Carlaw MSP has welcomed news revealing that Eastwood has the highest percentage of men in Scotland on the stem cell register.
The Anthony Nolan Foundation recently presented Mr Carlaw with a certificate at the Scottish Parliament in recognition of Eastwood having the highest percentage of men on the stem cell register when compared with all other Scottish Parliament Constituencies.
The organisation also presented Mr Carlaw with a certificate confirming that Eastwood had the second highest number of new donors added to the stem cell register in the last year.
Eastwood has a total number of 1312 potential lifesavers on the stem cell register and 281 new donors have added their names to the list in the past year.
Around 2000 cancer patients in the UK require a stem cell transplant each year but on many occasions a donor is not available or is unable to be found quickly enough.
The Anthony Nolan Foundation have launched a 'Communities vs Blood Cancer' campaign to highlight the importance of new donors coming forward particularly amongst young men aged between 16-30 and individuals from an ethnic minority background.
Commenting Jackson Carlaw MSP said:
“As the local MSP, I am delighted with the selfless contribution the people of Eastwood are making towards treating blood cancer in Scotland'.
“Eastwood is the Scottish Parliamentary Constituency with the highest percentage of men on the stem cell register and last year recorded the second largest number of new donors being added to the register in Scotland'.
“The Anthony Nolan Foundation do a tremendous job saving the lives of people who have been diagnosed with blood cancer and it is critically important that potential new donors are encouraged to come forward.”
